Salem Academy will have an interesting year. They return few key offensive weapons that would allow them to be competitive consistently. It will be very hard to be competitive in such a top-heavy league. The strength of this team will be the quality wide receivers and running backs. If they want to be competitive in any games other than the “gimmies” of Umatilla and Corbett, they need to find somewhat of a functioning defense or things could go bad fast.
Everything is pointing to another long football season for Salem Academy as they play six away games in 2019. Their schedule is incredibly tough, making winning more than two games in their league very difficult. Look for Salem Academy to go 2-7 or 3-6 once again in 2019.
Key losses- Thomas Eppley RB/S, Matthew Krieger RB/LB,Jarrett Graff WR/CB
Key Returners- Deegan Davis WR/DB, Kaine Mickalson QB/LB, Luke Finn RB/LB, Alex Finn WR/LB, Spencer Arnold OL/DL,Gaven Christenson G/NG, Devin Cornelius TE/DL.
One of the 4A dropdowns that did not see success in 2018 was Corbett. The Cardinals went just 1-9 and the lone win was by only six points. This team is so young they are only losing three total players from last season. Returning a large majority of the 2018 team, they will have more experience and hopefully create a better game plan in 2019. This team has a lot of big Offensive Lineman and look to push teams around. However, last season 4 freshman started on the offensive and defensive lines. If they are looking to have a quality team in the future they need to develop all the youth they have or they will stay at the bottom of the league for years to come.
In 2019 things for Corbett will be better with more experience out on the field but that won’t reflect a different win total in 2019 as their only real winnable game will be against Blanchet Catholic. We predict they will go 1-8 or 0-9 in 2019.
